TCRG - for teaching Step Dancing (solo's and trads) to advanced/championship level

TCRG exams - we have now moved to WIDA so below is the structure for the WIDA exams

Minimum age to take part 1 is 16 years old.
Minimum age to take part 4 is 18 years old.

Next opportunities to take the TCRG Exams with WIDA are:
2025, May 17th to 18th, Monasterevin GFC, Co. Kildare, Ireland - book by February 28th 2025


For each of the 4 exams: 
70% is the minimum pass rate - must achieve 70 or over on each exam to pass.
The candidate must be able to dance and teach all dances.
The candidate may be asked to demonstrate/explain/teach particular moves/techniques.
Steps taught/danced must be level-appropriate.

1. Beginner Light Reel (32 bars)
2. Beginner Light Jig (32 bars)
3. Beginner Slip Jig (32 bars)
4. Beginner Single Jig (32 bars)
5. Beginner Hornpipe (32 bars)
6. Beginner Treble Jig (32 bars)
7. St. Patrick’s Day (30 bars)



TCRG Part 2
1. Primary Light Reel (32 bars)
2. Primary Slip Jig (32 bars)
3. Primary Hornpipe (32 bars)
4. Primary Treble Jig (32 bars)
5. The Blackbird (30 bars)
6. Jockey to the Fair (30 bars)


TCRG Part 3 
1. Intermediate/Open Light Reel (32 bars)
2. Intermediate/Open Slip Jig (32 bars)
3. Intermediate/Open Hornpipe (32 bars)
4. Intermediate/Open Treble Jig (32 bars)
5. Job of Journeywork (30 bars)
6. Garden of Daisies (32 bars)
7. King of the Fairies (32 bars)


TCRG Part 4
Submit a list of 6 modern sets (jig/hornpipe):
From which the examiners will choose 3, which the candidate must dance
3 traditional sets:
3 Sea Captains, White Blanket and The Hunt
Written paper - to identify 25 tunes:
5 dances (name, timings) from Reel, Hornpipe, Jigs (Light/Slip/Single/Heavy)
20 set tunes (name, timing, #bars in step & set) 
Written paper - of 20 questions on WIDA rules
